The function of an expansion valve
The function of the expansion valve is to ensure a pressure decrease in the evaporator by expansion of high pressure liquid refrigerant gas to low pressure liquid gas. As heat is absorbed when changing from liquid phase into gas phase (evaporation), cold air is available to then cool the interior of the car.
Depending on the air conditioning system design there are two types of valves: The thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) and the throttle valve (orifice tube).
