The function of an oil cooler
Oil is without doubt one of the most important fluids contained within a vehicle, because it lubricates the moving parts of the engine and absorbs a lot of heat. Oil coolers are used to cool oil and hydraulic fluids for engines and automatic gear boxes. Downsized or high-performance engines requires a dedicated oil cooler, as do automatic gearbox. But actually such coolers are a common sight in most of modern vehicles.
The purpose of the device is simple: it exchanges lubricant’s heat with radiator coolant or ambient air, keeping the temperature on a safe level.
